The week is open to everyone that wants to be involved so please feel free to bring children along for the workshops. A creche will also be running throughout the week but email bethysummers@gmail.com beforehand so that there is an idea of numbers, timing, etc. Also, if you’re able to give a helping hand with this then please also get in contact!

London FreeSchool Week Soon Approaches…

The planning for the London FreeSchool week is going well with confirmed workshops and the such like starting to appear on the website. Bowl Court Social Centre, the original location for the weeks event, was sadly evicted a couple of weeks ago. However, the event lives on and has moved to the rampART, on rampart St. (http://www.rampart.co.nr) and LARC, 62 Fieldgate St (http://www.londonarc.org) in Whitechapel, E1. After all a free school should not be limited and contained by concrete walls!

The deadline for workshops is soon approaching so if you are up for facilitating something over the week drop us a line (deschooling_society@lists.riseup.net) with a brief description of the event, how long you will need, your availability between the 1st and 7th September and if you have any special requirements (e.g. Tools / equipment). If you do this by monday then we can include it in the timetable.

If you want to know what is happening over the week and when, you are unfortunately going to have to wait until the full timetable has been released on Wednesday. But you can get a little taster by looking to the right of this page and clicking on the different themes.

On Monday 1st September there will be a Welcome to London FreeSchool lunch from 12:30-1:30PM at rampART. This is an opportunity for people to come along, meet each other, have some food and find out about the week ahead.

the Next London FreeSchool Meeting…

There is a meeting this Thursday, the 14th August, from 6pm onwards at rampART (http://www.rampart.co.nr) to discuss the week long FreeSchool event at the beginning of September. Since Bowl Court Social Centre was evicted last Thursday, the hot topic of tomorrow’s meeting will be location. Other things to be discussed are the list of workshops, skillshare and discussions confirmed thus far and advertising the event. If you would like to get involved in organising the event or have any suggestions please come along or email deschooling_society@lists.riseup.net.

Week long Free School 1st-7th September

This week long event will include workshops, skill-sharing and discussions around the themes of:

Food, Creative arts, Permaculture, DIY, Science, Languages and Gender

The event will be completely free and open to all people willing to respect the ideals of the free school and each other. The free school will be held at the rampART on rampart St. (http://www.rampart.co.nr) and LARC, 62 Fieldgate St (http://www.londonarc.org) in Whitechapel.

The Free School Concept

A free school aims to confront the hierarchy and inequality which dominates learning. It stems from a belief that the control and institutionalisation of education is wrong and as communities we need to reclaim knowledge in order to develop self reliance. The ‘free’ in free school refers to the freedom of learning as well as learning outside of the monetary system. It directly challenges the elitism of the expert and ‘doctor knows best’ attitude understanding that we are all equal and can learn from one another.
